Love Comes Naturally!

It is natural for mothers to want only the best for their families. That is why many moms today are constantly looking for safe and natural ways to care for their loved ones.  With easier access to information, more Filipino mothers are rediscovering plant-based remedies based on traditional medicine practices as safer alternatives to chemical preparations.  Mothers are now aware that these healthcare products don’t have harmful side effects.  This is why it’s no surprise that ASCOF Lagundi is the number one herbal cough and asthma remedy brand and the most successful phytomedicine (or plant-based drug) in the market today.  Manufactured by PascualLab, ASCOF is made from 100% natural and all-organic lagundi leaves, grown and nurtured in the company’s own award-winning and certified organic LAC farm.   As the  first plant-based medicine  registered under the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it was developed through years of scientific research and validated by clinical trials.  Through the years, ASCOF continues to follow the stringent standards of the World Health Organization and the Philippine FDA.

Today, ASCOF welcomes the newest members of its family, Winnie Monsod and Winnie Cordero, as its brand ambassadors for the campaign towards choosing natural, quality healthcare products. There couldn’t have been two outstanding women – who are among the most trusted media personalities in the country today more fitting to represent what the ASCOF brand is all about. As experts in their respective fields, they are both women of integrity who exhibit passion and dedication to their craft. But behind the scenes, they are also typical Filipino moms who always put their families first. Being firm believers in the healing power of nature, both Winnie Monsod and Winnie Cordero choose to give their families the number one herbal cough and asthma remedy in the market.

Mia Pascual-Cenzon, PascualLab’s Director for Corporate Communications, says that the company is honored to have these two exemplary mothers as ASCOF spokespersons. “Because they are natural moms themselves, they represent the ideals of the brand. They can effectively help relay the message to other women that nurturing their families and providing the best in healthcare can be done naturally, such as choosing an herbal medicine brand that has no harmful side effects, keeping them safe from possible health risks.”

University of the Philippines Economics professor, columnist  and  noted economist Winnie Monsod, who hosts the hard-hitting news show Bawal ang Pasaway, and has a widely-followed commentary segment on GMA network’s  Unang Hirit,  has always exemplified truth and fairness to her viewers and students alike.  Her integrity is untarnished, her opinions valued by many,  and she is respected by people from all walks of life.

TV and radio personality Winnie Cordero is one of the hosts of the morning show Umagang Kay Ganda, where she has become a household name due to her knack for being able to relate current issues to the reality of what is happening in the streets.  Her natural candor and charm has endeared her to her viewers and listeners, who appreciate her for her down-to-earth personality and her practical, sensible tips and advices.

These two ‘natural’ mothers join a fellow nurturing mom, Congressional Representative Lucy Torres-Gomez, as ASCOF spokespersons and advocates of safe, natural medicine. Together, they embody the ideals of ASCOF – a product of the highest quality that Filipino families can trust.

Ascof Lagundi sends a big thank you to NIRPROMP (and why you should thank them too)

The Philippine herbal industry has indeed come a long way. Herbal medicinal plants and their use in treating illnesses have been part of our culture since early civilization and passed on from countless mothers to children for generations and generations. But did you know that it was only until after World War II when research on their effectiveness and safety actually started?

The National Integrated Research Program on Medicinal Plants (NIRPROMP) was formed in the 1970s and composed of a group of scientists drawn from the academe and other research institutions. Its primary mission is to make available inexpensive medicines of proven therapeutic efficacy to Filipinos and to study medicinal plants in depth.

Since its inception and until now, the NIRPROMP has been working tirelessly to provide Filipinos with safe, effective, good quality and affordable health care products specially in the form of herbal medicines.

Through their tireless and dilligent efforts in research, strict clinical testing, and adhering to government as well as international standards, medicinal plant products such as Akapulko lotions, Sambong tablets, and Lagundi tablets and syrup have been made available to Filipinos nationwide.

The commitment and perseverance of NIRPROMP is a proof of the Filipinos’ ingenuity. There is truly nothing more fulfilling than harvesting the wealth of nature to provide the Filipinos better and healthier lives. And to that, we say, Thank you!

Say Hello to ASCOF’s First Ever Natural Super Mom of the Year Winner

Hi Natural Mommies!

As part of our Natural Mom of the week feature, we interviewed Mommy Esperanza Yu who is a certified public accountant, a teacher by profession, a daughter, a friend, an employer, a neighbor, and most of all, a natural super mom (she won the ASCOF NATURAL SUPER MOM OF THE YEAR contest)! Most people call her “Teacher Espie” but she also loves her “other” title, "naynay"

Read on to find out how Mommy Espie started going natural, her fond memories about guava leaves, some tips for healthier living, and the challenges she wholeheartedly faces for her children!

How She Started Going Natural
Mommy Espie is blessed to be surrounded by good friends who are not only "health conscious", but also "health aware"... These are the type of persons who actively research what is good for a person’s physical, spiritual and mental well-being, and are more than happy to share their knowledge. Through them, she got to understand and appreciate that natural is the only and best way to go. “Natural is not only healthy, it is also a less expensive lifestyle!”

For the Sake of Guava
It is widely believed that the steam from boiled "young" guava leaves hastens the healing of wounds, no matter how severe - a practice which has helped Mommy Espie immensely after giving natural birth to her first child, Kimberly (She was up and about, as if nothing had happened less than a week after giving birth!) but one time when she was in the toilet getting "steamed up", an earthquake hit Manila! The ground softened like clay, the 4 walls of her bathroom were shaking back and forth as if to collapse, and all she could do was stand still because she was wounded and still naked!

Another story Mommy Espie shared with us was when she was pregnant with her second daughter, Michelle in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates with no relatives or friends nearby and her becoming more apprehensive as her due date is getting nearer: “I walked all around the city looking for a guava tree and finally found one near Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank. With knife in tow, I went out to cut some guava leaves (to store in our freezer so I can boil them once I gave birth) but the security guard of the bank saw me, apprehended me and angrily grabbed the leaves from my hands. I practically begged him to give them back to me, that I only needed a few because my due date was coming soon and it was the only guava tree I could find in the entire city!  In spite of the language barrier (the guard was an Arab), I somehow got my message through, he returned the cut leaves to me, but told me never, ever to come back. Needless to say, I  thanked him profusely, got my leaves and had a faster healing process as a result. Twist of story, after giving birth, I was accepted to work in -- of all places -- Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, and the guard even became my friend!”

Her Best Tips for Other Natural Moms
“Having worked in the Middle East for almost a decade, I've noticed that their senior population are healthy because they start the day right - in the morning, even before having breakfast, they drink a glass of lukewarm water with half a lemon.   They say this is for cleansing and I've been doing this for some time now”.

Mommy Espie also drinks pure coconut juice as much as possible instead of ordering soda or sugary drinks in restaurants. She has been practicing this since she had UTI during her pregnancy with her first child. “It was coconut juice that cured me. We are fortunate because fresh coconut juice is easy to find and is relatively cheap in our country”.

How Being a Natural Mom Saved Her Daughter’s Life
One of the toughest times any mom goes through is when our children are sick - we storm the heavens with our prayers so that our children will get well soon. Sometimes, we even pray that the sickness be ours instead of our kids' and we are always so willing to bear the pain and suffering for them!”

Mommy Espie recalls when her daughter Michelle had dengue fever a week before her senior's prom:   “There was a dengue outbreak in our area and when Michelle's fever would not go away after a couple of days, I brought her to the hospital, had her checked up, and when the lab tests came out, it was confirmed that she had dengue fever and had to be confined. Doctors told me that there is no cure to dengue and we just had to monitor Michelle's platelets every so often to make sure that the count does not go down to critical levels to a point when blood transfusion would be necessitated”.
Upon hearing this, Mommy Espie immediately started a text brigade to all her friends and acquaintances to - aside from praying for Michelle's quick recovery - help her find "tawa-tawa" leaves, a natural herb that freely grows in vacant lots like weeds, but is believed to be a sure cure to dengue. Her friends then responded by not only bringing tawa-tawa leaves, but tawa-tawa tea as well. Her friends took it upon themselves to search, clean and boil the tawa-tawa leaves so that when it reached Michelle, it was all ready to drink.  Thanks to the very caring doctors, classmates and of course, Mommy Espie’s well-meaning friends, Michelle's blood platelet count started to rise steadily but surely after taking the tea allowing her to attend her senior's prom in time -  beautiful, happy and yes, healthy again!

Our First Natural Mom of the Week!

Hi Natural Mommies!

We recently interviewed Mommy Maye Domencil, a chemist by profession, a fulltime wife to an ever patient and understanding husband, and 24/7 mom to their little bundle of joy. She writes at about motherhood and how she makes sure that her son is safe. Being a Chemist, she knows about the harmful chemicals that might cause danger to her son and family as well.

We learned so much from our interview with Mommy Maye that we wanted to feature her as our very first Natural Mom of the week in our blog! Read on to get to know Mommy Maye and how she is a great example of a Natural Mom!

Why she uses natural products...
Mommy Maye told us that being a chemist, she knows how chemicals could harm people and she uses this knowledge as an advantage for her family. When her son has colds, she will first give him oregano (which he has been taking since he is 1-day old). Also, instead of giving him bottled baby food, she prepares natural foods from fruits and vegetables. She and her husband also dry up malunggay leaves to make tea and also use it to garnish their baby's congee. She always uses natural remedies and herbal medicine first before taking any prescribed medicines.

Why use Natural Products and her top Natural Remedies:
Sensing a great amount of trust for Natural products from her, we asked why she prefers Natural products especially for her family and she replied, “I use natural products because it is natural and has no chemicals on it”. Aside from that, she says that, “A natural product has more preserved nutrients than chemically treated products”.

Because of this, she was happy to share with us her favorite natural remedies, which include using oregano leaves for her son’s colds; garlic for yeast/fungal infection; serpentina as an antibiotic; guava leaves as antiseptic (which are also effective against yeast infections when used as steam bath because after 2 days the wounds caused by the infection would be almost healed); brown sugar for diarrhea; and using tea for her son’s bath as it makes her son’s skin flawless, whiter, and helps prevent rashes as well.

On one of her challenges as a Natural Mom:
Mommy Maye’s current challenge is about switching from disposable diapers to reusable cloth diapers. She has read about so many disadvantages of disposable diapers and has made up her mind to switch to a more natural alternative because by doing so, she's not only able to save money but also, do her part in saving the world by minimizing her use of non-biodegradable materials that may contribute to global warming.

At the end of the day, being a true natural mom, Maye appeals to everyone to shift to a more natural lifestyle, "In this age, where everything is all instant, diseases are also instant. Using natural medicines and ingredients will free us from harmful chemicals. Though they are claiming it in a minimum level, its accumulation in the body might be harmful to us in the long run. Also, we can save by using natural ingredients and medicines. My husband is planting herbal plants and vegetables in pots and empty milk cans. We do not need to buy medicines because it is already in our home. Aside from that, I can assure that the food I am giving my son is free from pesticide residues and other chemicals that were used on it.”

How about you, fellow Natural Mommy? Why do you choose to live a more natural life? Leave a comment or send us an email at and you could be our next featured Natural Mom of the Week!

The Natural Moms - Ascof Lagundi Farm Tour

Hi Natural Moms!

We've been busy the past couple of months preparing an event to formally launch this humble blog of ours and we decided to keep things intimate, simple, and very unique to catch the attention of our fellow mombloggers.

We had the following keywords to guide us through the brain-storming sessions:

Natural, Organic, Unique, Experiential, Simple, Bonding, Fun!

We talked among ourselves and gave our ideas until we finally agreed to hold a LAGUNDI FARM TOUR at the Leonie Agri Corp Farm! It was a fun-filled event that we shared with bloggers and natural product advocates; there were even some daddy bloggers who cam along and we all had fun learning about the benefits of Organic Products, the stringent and safe methods used to certify these products, and of course experienceing the sights, smells, and sounds of the first and largest fully organic-fully sustainable "FARMACY" in the Philippines.

A big THANK YOU to fellow natural mommies (and daddies) who went with us!

If you want to read more about our trip; you may visit these blogs to see the experience through different points of view:

The nanny diaries

Nannies, or Yayas as we call them, have almost been a staple sight in Filipino households. With both parents having to work, many of them choose to hire a yaya to care for their children. Even some stay-at-home moms find that the assistance of a yaya as something very helpful, especially to childcare.

Letting a stranger take care of your child can be very scary. Which is why parents have to be very careful when they hire a yaya, and when they let the yaya take care of the child alone.

What parents have to remember is that even if they hire a yaya, they should not forget traditional childcare practices. In today’s society where both parents have to work, they still should be hands-on with how they take care of their kids. The best presence and influence for children after all, is and will always be their

Although it might be tough and consuming, having an active hand in your kids’ formative years is very important. Seeing their growth for yourself is priceless, and that ability to shape their future is something that only parents have.

The natural choices are often the best choices in life. They are more cost-efficient, they are better especially in the long run. While it is commonplace to have an extra hand with a yaya in today’s society, it should be remembered that nothing can replace the active hand of parents in the growth of their children.
